Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS, is the president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), where he leads with a vision for excellence in academic health sciences and human services. Prior to his selection as president in 2020, Dr. Jarrell held numerous leadership roles at UMB including provost, chief academic and research officer, senior vice president, executive vice president, and dean of the Graduate School. He first arrived at UMB as chair of the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Department of Surgery in 1997. As president, Dr. Jarrell’s priorities include working for equity and justice, maintaining and growing statewide collaborations, and strengthening the University’s commitment to innovation and discovery through the expansion of UMB’s over half-billion-dollar R1 research enterprise.
