Dr. Jamila Smith-Loud

Jamila Smith-Loud is the Head of the Impact Lab at Google Research. In this role, she bridges the gap between technical AI development and global societal impact. Leading a specialized team of socio-technical researchers, Jamila spearheads initiatives in responsible data governance, human impact assessments, and community-informed dataset development. Her mission is to democratize Responsible AI, translating complex ethical considerations into actionable, open-source tools and strategic collaborations that shape how AI is built and deployed equitably.

Before her time at Google, Jamila was the Manager of Strategic Initiatives at the civil rights nonprofit, Advancement Project. In this role, she supported the development of initiatives to promote fair outcomes for all communities through applied research and analysis. She also served as a Fellow with the Political and Legal Anthropology Review Journal, where her research explored rights-based discourse and the complex intersections of law, power, identity, and cultural change. A native of Los Angeles, Jamila Smith-Loud is an alumna of UC Berkeley and Howard University School of Law.
