Dr. Santosh Pitla

Dr. Santosh Pitla is a Professor and Associate Department Head for Research and Innovation in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He also serves as Co-Director of the University of Nebraska System’s AI Institute, where he helps advance artificial intelligence research, education, and workforce development across four campuses.

Dr. Pitla leads the Machine Automation and Agricultural Robotics (MAARS) Lab, where his research focuses on AI-enabled robotics, autonomous agricultural systems, digital agriculture, and intelligent machinery for sustainable and profitable farming systems. His work integrates artificial intelligence, sensing, and automation to develop next-generation technologies that improve agricultural productivity, resilience, and environmental stewardship.

He actively collaborates with industry, government, and academic partners to develop innovative solutions at the intersection of AI, robotics, and agriculture. Dr. Pitla is also deeply engaged in workforce development and education, designing new courses and experiential learning programs that prepare students and professionals for the rapidly evolving AI-driven economy. Through his research, leadership, and entrepreneurial initiatives, Dr. Pitla is helping position Nebraska and the Midwest as a global hub for AI, robotics, and digital agriculture innovation.
