Dr. Steven Ashby
Senior Vice President for Strategic Partnerships, Battelle

Dr. Steven Ashby is Battelle’s Senior Vice President for Strategic Partnerships for National Laboratory Management and Operations.  In this role, he engages Battelle’s partners and key stakeholders, supports governance responsibilities at Battelle-affiliated laboratories, catalyzes cross-cutting science and technology initiatives, and contributes to the professional development of emerging senior leaders.

Dr. Ashby previously served as director of the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for ten years, where he set its strategic direction and oversaw a $1.7 billion R&D budget. Under his leadership, the laboratory grew substantially and advanced its missions in scientific discovery, energy resiliency, and national security.  Before becoming director, he served as PNNL’s deputy director for science and technology for seven years. Prior to joining PNNL, he spent nearly 21 years at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where he founded the Center for Applied Scientific Computing and served in several leadership positions.

A widely recognized leader in computational science, Dr. Ashby is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics; a member of the Washington State Academy of Sciences; and a national innovation commissioner for U.S. Council on Competitiveness.  He earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
